BIODEGRADABLE CUTLERY:
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED...
Our plastic cutlery supplier is at the forefront of research and development to produce environmentally friendly processes and products. For some years, they have been working with leading experts and a British University to bring to market a range of biodegradable cutlery, which we believe will offer unique
benefits. Unlike the other materials on the market this process does NOT affect the physical nature of the products and does NOT dissolve or degrade in use, especially with hot foods and drinks.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Plastic cutlery is moulded from polystyrene crystals. A cellulose based additive has been developed which when mixed with polystyrene, takes on a biodegradable characteristic. This leaves the physical
properties of the cutlery unchanged, so that it looks the same, it feels the same and handles the same as regular plastic.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE CUTLERY TO BIODEGRADE?
As soon as the cutlery is in contact with the soil, the degradation process begins. Within a few months
the structure of the product is broken down. Total disintegration will take place within approximately 2years. Normal plastic products, not made from biodegradable materials, take tens of years before they start to degrade and it could be longer before they disintegrate.
IS THE PLASTIC EFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE?
Biodegradable cutlery is effected by the same temperature as cutlery produced by regular material.
The products can be stored in temperatures from zero to 50 degrees centigrade. When tested in water
at 95 degrees centigrade for ten minutes the products showed no distortion.
WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF BIODEGRADABLE CUTLERY?
The Shelf life of biodegradable cutlery is in excess of 12 months, the same as cutlery produced from
regular plastic materials, provided normal good housekeeping conditions are observed ie the bags and
cardboard boxes are sealed and stored in a dry environment
IS BIODEGRADABLE CUTLERY SAFE FOR FOOD USE?
Yes, and the same food safety tests and certification apply.
